August 26: ''Tweeting Marathon'' for Gilad Shalit

Kidnapped soldier, Gilad Shalit

Battle to Free Kidnapped Israeli Soldier Has Taken to Twitter

( Hamas terrorists kidnapped Staff Sergeant Gilad Shalit in 2006, at the young age of 19. He remains in captivity to this day and is believed to be alive. Diplomatic and rescue efforts have proven fruitless, and the battle to free this Israeli hero has taken to the web.

Dozens of Jewish organizations will join thousands of Shalit's tech-savvy supporters on the Internet in a grassroots effort to increase awareness of his plight. The August 26th launch will fall just two days before Shalit's 23rd birthday (which falls out on Shabbat).

This 24-hour ''tweeting marathon'' will bring Shalit's name and cause to the forefront of the popular social media website, Twitter, and hopefully secure a place on its top ten list of trending discussions, thereby garnering international attention.

''Dubbed “Tweet4Shalit’, the event will include thousands of supporters who sign onto Twitter to tweet the hashtag "#GiladShalit” explained campaign initiator @JIDF (Jewish Internet Defense Force) in an email sent to, the official website of Chabad Lubavitch headquarters, is participating in the campaign with a twist of its own.

“By holding Shalit, Hamas is in direct violation of international law,” explains Yaacov Behrman, the site's coordinator, “We are asking our readers to bring awareness to his cause by tweeting good deeds in his honor.”

Those on Twitter should tweet the good deed or mitzvah they are doing in Shalit's honor, along with the hashtag #GiladShalit. Interested readers who do not have Twitter can register on for free.

Godwin's Law a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin. It states: "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches."
Song from Moshe Hecht, dedicated to the Holtzbergs. Here are the (recently discovered) lyrics:

In this army of lamplighters lamplighters lamplighters,
sending your message to the world, to the world, to the world

into these train station caves
and dark alleyways
into the depths of foreign countries
to all four corners, through these cold callous borders
these are your orders...

and we will dance loyal with your torches in our right hand
we will march forward to tell these young men
today is the day that you start being true
and all the days that you don't do, its not the real you...

this aint no temporary fix
we go for life this aint no field trip
yes your connected to your source and you feel it

To my faithful Shepherd,
I thank you, I walk with you
and I am grateful for the opportunity
to spread the light of the Almighty,
and to lamp light the world one soul at a time.
yes you're a leader, eager to reveal it

Hitler's Jewish Soldiers
On the murderous road to "racial purity" Hitler encountered unexpected detours, largely due to his own crazed views and inconsistent policies regarding Jewish identity. After centuries of Jewish assimilation and intermarriage in German society, he discovered that eliminating Jews from the rest of the population was more difficult than he'd anticipated. As Bryan Mark Rigg shows in this provocative new study, nowhere was that heinous process more fraught with contradiction and confusion than in the German military.

Rabbi’s Kidney Donation Inspires Community
When the opportunity arose for Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Ephraim Simon to potentially risk his life in the preservation of another’s, he paused. He wanted to give one of his kidneys to a suffering man; the problem was that he had to think about how he would communicate that decision to his nine children.
Wow. What a relief. These have been on my head for a gabillion ages. They had to be published so I can move on. They had to be published NOW cuz I am moving on. Yalla Chajija.

20th of Av

-One Minute of Torah-

Today is the 20th day of the Hebrew month of Av. It is the anniversary of the passing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's father, Reb Levi Yitzchok Schneerson. He was a renowned and brilliant scholar, a kabbalist, and a fearless, devoted community leader. Though he suffered greatly at the hands of the Communist government, throughout his ordeal, he remained steadfast in his commitment to teach Torah. He never ceased encouraging and inspiring those around him to observe the mitzvot.
In 1939 he was arrested for teaching Torah, an act which the Communists claimed undermined the authority of the government. Reb Levi Yitzchok was sentenced to five years in exile.

In a letter that Reb Levi Yitzchak wrote to his son, he emphasized the concept of faith in every little "dot and crown" of our G-d-given Torah, whereby each detail complements and perfects the others:

"Do not imagine that the process of argument and debate as engaged in by the Sages of the Mishna and Talmud and those who followed... falls into the category of regular human intellectual pursuit. No, it is not that at all... Rather, each of the Sages perceived the Torah's wisdom as it exists Above, according to the source of his soul.

"There is absolutely no doubt, that everything in both the Oral and Written Torah, and in all the holy books written by the sages and tzadikim who studied Torah, was said by G-d Himself, in that particular and exact wording."

Reb Levi Yitzchak lived with the realization of the importance of every aspect of Torah; he had utter self-sacrifice for the compliance to Torah's every detail and nuance.

May we be inspired to learn from his teachings and example. And may G-d help, that on this day of the tzadik's passing-a day when he is empowered to bring salvation to the world - each of us be redeemed from all worries and pains, ultimately leading to the everlasting salvation-the arrival of our Righteous Moshiach.

Toby Eagle a''h

It's her 2nd Yahrtzeit today.

"My wife and I knew that we were blessed with an extraordinary child from the time Toby was an infant, but we did not realize the impact she had on the world around her until her passing on the 19th of Menachem Av 5767." (David Eagle)

She's been on my sidebar for some time now. I think since I went through a stage of obsessively listening to her song "Is it Fair?" and reflecting about how much I can learn from her.

"In a way of hatzneah leches, walking humbly and modestly along the path of righteousness and kindness. Toby did not act with any fanfare or desire for recognition."

"she insisted on mastering the public transportation system rather than burdening others for rides and taxis to extracurricular activities."
"Toby worked tirelessly on behalf of the children of Gush Katif after they were expelled from their homes."

"Toby was a source of support to other young people who needed friendship and a positive perspective on life."
"Toby’s teaching method was twofold: to be a living example and to show her students unconditional love."

I think 'sweet' and I think 'solid' when I think of Toby.
I can't think when I think of her passing.
It's the most unreal thing to happen to sucha real thing.

Yet, as her friend writes on Project Pledge--

Many people knew Toby, but few knew her for as long and as much in quantity as I did. I feel that it's fair to say that she has seen every part of my life, and helped me with every aspect of my growth since I met her in the brownie girl scouts. We homeschooled, learned torah, built campfires, played violin, ice skated, orchestraed, 4-h'd, girl scouted, camped, hiked, shabbosed, shopped, went to music camp, met random people, cried, laughed, and hugged so many times that the part that she is of me is such a big piece, and now I don't know where that piece fits. It's funny a little bit if you think of the world as an enormous puzzle, and you have a person in your life who is such a big piece of your puzzle, but she's really a piece of G-d's puzzle, more than she was of yours, and if the puzzle goes to two different games, the G-d puzzle should come first, because he's the master over all creation.
Have you ever met someone who was so many things? If she was a piece of me, and she was so many things, then now that she's gone, then everything that is still with me of her and my memories of her are so firmly impressed in me that even though G-d took his puzzle piece back, I still have it. She's been tattooed on my heart, and she will always be there. I don't look at this and ask why, and I don't look and say it's not fair, because who am i to judge fair or not fair. she belonged to hashem so much more than she belonged to any human being. She was so caught in being purely herself, that she was purely angelic. And that is why I don't ask why. G-d put an angel on the world so that we could all know an angel. Now all we can say is thank you for giving us an inspiration in the form of Toby.

I conclude with a translation of Toby’s matzeiva:

Here lies the precious girl Toiba bas Zalman Dovid Eagle.

Her ways were pleasant and she was a refined soul; she was exemplary in the traits of kindness and compassion and in helping another person, from a deep love for a fellow Jew.

She received everyone with a smiling countenance, she was graceful in the eyes of all who saw her, she was happy and made others happy, she was active and talented and saw good results from her labor and from her learning.

She was deeply connected to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and she lived with faith in the coming of the Moshiach.

She was plucked at 20 years of age, Erev Shabbos Kodesh parshas Eikev 19 Menachem Av 5767.

May her soul be bound up in the living bond.

Stephie Mephie

Stephie Mephie doesn't like when people laugh so loudly at night. He goes to sleep at ten and wakes up at 6 for a brisk early morning walk and then he makes fried eggs in his shorts.

And he wears PLAID shorts with loafers without socks.

Uh huh and he hums off key while he cooks. With a big smile.

(and then it got dirty)

"ken mit a taf"

"i didn't tell you my dad speaks yiddish? i didn't think so. cuz it's not true. i learned it from r' gordon on impressed? i thought so."

Kfir oh Kfir,

ומדוע את אוכל לא לקחת?
אתה יודע שאתה תמיד מוזמן,

...waiting for a train to rome since all trains lead to rome

an excerpt from my partner's diaries:

...unsuccessfully trying to scramble eggs using several creative last resorts such as using the heat of the side walk as a stove, and then lighting matches and then a lighter underneath our frying pan and finally attempting to light a restaurant on fire and then using it as a flame. finally though we were forced to resign ourselves to our fate of yet another nutritious meal of tuna and ketchup. but looking at the bright side, at least we had ketchup....forget it. no bright sides this time. so for dessert chava cooked up a nice big plate of fettuccine Alfredo with thick pasta-NOT the thin kind-with creamy cheese sauce on a white plate with mushrooms, unfortunately she did all the cooking in her imagination but at least it worked for they say "its all in the mind". she even tried sharing it with me but somehow i just couldn't picture it well having finished lunch we took the train to rome, otherwise known as rrrrromaaaaa and as we figured out the hard way if u ask for just "rome" they wont understand we tried to get lost on the way but it didn't work cuz rome wasn't built in a day, so we arrived and we kept looking for a hostel to fit into our budget but still reasonable, like under one euro but after carrying our luggage which is abt double my size all around town we finally discovered we'd have to settle for 25 which turned out to be 5 star relative to our past accommodations. they even had a shower with running waTER WHICH IS A BIG LUXURY AFTER U HAVENT SHOWERED FOR 3 DAYS.....we thought that was an interesting method of testing our survival skills but we ended up testing the survival skills of everyone around us and they failed miserably. everywhere we walked we left like piles of dead bodies in our path.maybe not but there was definite next morning we woke up drooling at the thought of eating in the kosher restaurant, supposedly10 minutes away ...but after 3 hours of wandering and then discovering the address we were looking for doesn't exist, we were left to chavas fettuccini alfredo which was btw STILL hot(all in her imagination).big help it was that all roads lead to rome but what happens when u actually get there!?......anti we finally found a restaurant that charged like 10 bucks for a bottle of water and then an extra penalty fee for not liking ur salad and sitting at the wrong table . but it worked out fine in the end when the cook gave us a carving knife to slaughter the manager.....not that we used it......or at least not so then we took our frying pan and went to see the colosseum and then chava used the frying pan to take revenge on the romans for destroying our temple....all with a frying pan....anyway, we couldn't afford all the 2 euro to get into the colosseum since i had already used that money ration on a can of coke so we just took pics right outside which worked just as well..and if not, at least we dont know wat we were missing...and the bottle of coke was worth it.we originally planned to continue touring the next day and to get a tour of the jewish quarter which was closed that day since they were busy celebrating saint mary augustuss b-day......when in rome they do like the romans i guess...but then somehow at the very same moment we decided we had enough of we picked up and left, just like that.

Friday's phone call intensified my nostalgic feelings re our backpacking trip round Europe some summers ago.

an excerpt from my backpacking diaries:
